AgriHub
Proposed AgriHub at Ludhiana
The AgriHub comprises of a State of Art Rural Integrated Cold Chain Infrastructure. Its strategic location in a rural agricultural area of Ludhiana, in the state of Punjab, was effected particularly in view of the vast surrounding highly fertile and well irrigated agriculture land and climatic conditions which are ideal for cluster production of a wide range of high value horticulture crops. The proposed Infrastructure comprises of a 6000 metric ton Multi Commodity Cold Storage combined with a Post-Harvest Management and Primary Processing facility. This facility includes a Research & Development Centre and a Training Establishment for initiating effective backward link ages with local farmers and farmer groups.
The AgriHub activities are focused on preservation, storage, marketing and distribution of high quality commercial horticulture crops and facilitation of commercial horticulture crop production through backward linkages with small and marginal farmers and farmer associations and forward integrating with the wholesale and the fast developing modern retail chains. In this regard, Technico Agri Sciences Ltd, a step down subsidiary of ITC Ltd, an International Brand and the only and largest private sector producer of high quality virus free "early generation" seed potato in India, has shown interest and invited the promoter to engage in handling their seed potatoes. This arrangement would immediately benefit, during the first year itself, at least 70 farmers cultivating about 821 acres in Jagraon, district Ludhiana Punjab.
The AgriHub in its endeavour continues to adapt concepts and technologies from around the world especially pertaining post-harvest handling, storage and preservation of fresh horticulture produce and food commodities, which are most appropriate and relevant to rural India considering its existing agriculture scenario.
Some of the salient features and technological advantages of GMH AgriHub integrated multi-commodity cold storage and primary processing facility over traditional cold stores and collection centres are;
-Designed & Built in compliance to Technical Standards and Guidelines notified by National Horticulture Board / Government of India for Cold Chain infrastructure development in India.
-A Highly Energy efficient Cooling and Control System to assure reliability in maintaining critical storage environment recommended for preserving and storage fresh produce.
-Variable speed fan Drives for controlling air circulation to effectively remove the heat from the stored produce and at the same time conserving electricity and improve overall performance of the cooling system.
-100% power Backup by DG Sets and use of Solar Energy for emergency lighting.
-Provision of Automatic Ventilation and Energy Recovery System for providing a controlled flow of fresh air in the cold rooms to limit undesirable concentrations of CO2, Ethylene and other gases detrimental to fresh produce quality.
-A scientific and systematic storing arrangement has been adapted for long term storage of fresh produce, which can be stacked in bags, boxes or crates. This unique arrangement allows adequate air circulation even through produce like onions and potatoes stacked in bags enabling consistent and desirable range of temperature and humidity in the cold rooms at all times.
-The Cold Store has been provided with multiple chambers, six in numbers, with provision for maintaining different temperatures and humidity levels depending on the requirements of the stored produce. This makes the facility multipurpose for effectively storing different commodities throughout the year.
-The Primary Processing Facility comprises of a large covered area of about 1750 Sq. Meters to protect the fresh produce from heat and rain while it is in the process of curing in the ambient before storage or/and undergoing the process of grading, sorting, bagging, collection, consolidation, auction etc.
-A mechanized grading and sorting line of 18-20 Mt/hr. has been provided in the primary processing facility with provision to include one more similar capacity grading and sorting line.
-A training centre along with accommodation for the faculty and industry experts to facilitate on-site training to small and marginal farmers, specific to the crop and their areas of cultivation.
-The facility includes a demonstration farm for showcasing latest implements, farming practices, irrigation systems, pest control methods etc. to the local farmers in order to fortify its backward integration program.
- A Research & Development Centre to establish realistic and true indicators for optimizing the quality and storability of various type and varieties of fresh produce like onions, garlic, carrots, ginger, citrus, process potatoes etc. enabling successful long term storage, handling, packaging and deliveries, thereby creating an effective sourcing point in the rural areas to reliably cater to the fast growing and demanding domestic food supply chains, wholesalers as well as for exports.
-The entire AgriHub facility is secured with a high compounded wall and a security system to protect the stored commodities and its resources, keeping in view its location in a remote area.
-The facility complies with all the conditions for Cold Stores as being laid out under the Warehousing (Development & Regulatory) Act 2007 for negotiability of warehousing receipts.
